Job Summary

The Therapeutic Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing and implementing recreational activities for the Monroe Campus as well as responsibility for recreation center supervision, risk and safety management. The position requires an individual committed to recreation as a career choice through training and continuing education.

Job Description

Essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to:

  1. Provides supervision of recreation center facilities including gym, pool, playground or other play areas to maintain an environment that is safe and secure.

  2. Working as part of a treatment team, this position has a caseload of youth in which they assist in diagnosis and evaluation through recreation assessments,† developing a treatment goal and monitoring progress through appropriate documentation.†

  3. Provides supervision of agency youth and their staff to monitor safety and quality of youth participation.

  4. Provides recreation programs, activity leadership and team building initiatives that promote healthy leisure lifestyle choices, psychomotor skills, and growth and socialization development.

  5. May have involvement with special clubs or hobby groups (i.e. bike club, plant club, arts and crafts, camping, girl or boy scouts).

  6. Recognizes and addresses aggressive student/youth behavior and is trained and proficient in behavior management and Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI).

  7. Seeks recreational resource development including community contacts, free tickets, special events and activity supply needs.

  8. Assists youth in positive play experiences through role modeling, skill development and provision of recreation opportunities.

  9. Writes concise yet thorough assessment narratives, goals and objectives, and progress notes.

  10. Performs other duties as requested including but not limited to equipment repair and upkeep, special event planning, work order submittals, safety inspections and fund raising.

  11. Provides direct care services as needed.


Candidates must have a valid driverís license and meet agency driving standards.

Associates degree required. Youth Recreation in a Human Services environment desired. Bachelorís preferred in Recreation, Physical Education or related field of study.
